His Story
Born on January 17th, 1942 as Cassius Marcellus Clay Junior, at the age of twenty-two Muhammad Ali got the world's attention by winning the World Heavyweight Championship.
Three years later, in 1967, he became a hated figure to many in the U.S.A. when he stubbornly refused to join the Vietnam War. Muhammad Ali had his boxing licence taken away and had his championship removed because of his avoiding military service. He fought for his title and his right to refuse military service. He had this right because of his Muslim religious beliefs. It took four years, but Muhammad eventually won his case and didn't serve jail time, as he was supposed to.
Ali went on to win the world heavyweight championship three times. His motto was "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.". Muhammad Ali went on to become the most famous boxer in the world, defeating boxing greats like Joe Frazier and George Foreman.
Muhammad's character stood out, making him a favourite boxer, and a role model, to many. He would sometimes make up chants or rhymes about taking his opponent down before even entering the ring. He became famous for his tough style and his gutsy moves. Muhammad made himself one of the most famous athlete's in the world.
Sports Illustrated named him "Sportsman of the Century." and he was also given " Sports Personality of the Century" by the BBC.
Muhammad now lives in Paradise Valley. Recently, Muhammad Ali known as the greatest boxer of all time for some, has been fighting his health. He suffers from Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease worsens progressively and eventually leads to death.
